Understanding M3U Playlists and Xtream Codes

What an M3U playlist and an Xtream Codes login are, how they differ, which to use on each device, and how to keep your login details safe.

What is the difference between M3U and Xtream Codes?

An M3U playlist is a single web link to a text file listing every channel's stream address. Xtream Codes is a login — server URL, username and password — that lets a player request live channels, the programme guide, movies and series in one go. Use Xtream Codes whenever your player supports it; use M3U for software that only accepts a playlist link, such as VLC.

M3U playlists

An M3U file is plain text. Each entry has a channel name, an optional group and logo, and the stream URL. Your provider gives you a link that generates this file for your account.

Good for: VLC, older players, and smart-TV apps where you paste a URL on the developer's website.

Limitations: the programme guide (EPG) is often a separate link, movies and series may not appear, and very long playlists can be slow to load.

Xtream Codes

Xtream Codes is an interface many players understand. You enter three fields — server, username, password — and the player fetches channel categories, the EPG, catch-up information and on-demand content automatically.

Good for: TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, MyTVOnline and most modern players.

Tips: type the server exactly as given, including http:// and the port (for example :8080). Paste rather than type on phones.

MAC portals

MAG boxes, and some Formuler setups, use a third method: a portal URL linked to the device's MAC address. Your provider registers the MAC, then you enter the portal URL in the box's settings.

Keep your login private

Your M3U link and Xtream details contain your account credentials. Anyone who has them can use your connections. Don't share them in screenshots or forums, and ask support to reset them if you think they've leaked.
