How does IPTV setup differ on Android TV and smart TVs?
On Android TV and Google TV you install a player from Google Play and log in with Xtream Codes — the easiest route. Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) TVs use players from their own stores, which usually need you to register the TV's MAC address on the player's website. Hisense depends on the system: Google TV models work like Android TV, VIDAA models like Samsung and LG. If your TV is old or its store has no player, a streaming stick is the reliable fix.
Android TV and Google TV
Sony, TCL, Philips and many Hisense models run Android TV or Google TV, as do Chromecast with Google TV and Nvidia Shield. Install a player such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters from Google Play, choose Xtream Codes and enter your details. See the Android TV guide.
Samsung (Tizen)
- Install a player from the Samsung Apps store.
- Note the MAC address and key on its first screen.
- Enter them on the player's website with your playlist.
- Reload the app on the TV.
Some Tizen players charge a one-time fee to their developer after a trial. See the Samsung guide.
LG (webOS)
LG TVs on webOS 4 and later work much like Samsung: install from the LG Content Store, register the MAC, add your playlist. SS IPTV is a free option that uses a pairing code. See the LG guide.
Hisense
Check Settings → System → About. Google TV and Android TV models follow the Android route; VIDAA models use a MAC-based player from the VIDAA store where available. See the Hisense guide.
When a stick is better
- The TV is several years old and its store has few or no players.
- The built-in Wi-Fi is weak and there's no Ethernet.
- You want the same player on every TV in the house.
A Firestick or Google TV device in a spare HDMI port solves all three, and usually gets app updates for longer than TV platforms do.
